In 2023, after graduating, Non Vandeth began working as a freelance filmmaker, creating short films and documentaries. While working on different projects, he gradually found himself drawn toward telling stories that come from personal observations and everyday experiences.
For Vandeth, filmmaking is not only a way to tell stories, but also a way to understand people and the world around him. He is interested in the small, often overlooked moments of life—the silence between people, memories that remain with us, relationships that change over time, and the emotions that are difficult to put into words.
Through his independent short films, Vandeth continues to search for his own cinematic voice. He approaches filmmaking with curiosity and openness, experimenting with visual language, atmosphere, and intimate storytelling. His work often begins with simple observations and develops into stories that explore human connection, identity, memory, and the places we call home.
As an emerging filmmaker, he hopes to create films that not only communicate his own perspective but also leave space for audiences to find their own meaning within the story. Each film is part of an ongoing journey of learning, discovering, and understanding what it means to tell stories through cinema
In 2025, filmmaker Non Vandeth directed Old Building, a short film about a man who refuses to sell an aging building because of the memories and sense of community it holds.
As pressure grows to sell the property, he faces a difficult choice: let go of the building for financial gain or protect a place that has become part of the community’s identity. If the building is sold, it will be demolished, taking with it not only a physical space, but also the memories and connections built there over the years.
Through a personal and intimate story, Old Building explores memory, belonging, community, and the emotional cost of losing places that shape our lives.
The film was selected for Chaktomuk Short Film Festival in Cambodia and Show Me Shorts Film Festival in New Zealand, bringing the story to both local and international audiences.
